NFPA 704: Personal Sanitization

Staying clean to avoid injury

The primary purpose of RTK labeling is to protect employees who work with hazardous chemicals. Personal sanitization is an important aspect of this protection. By practicing appropriate personal sanitization before and after an accident, workers will be more able to minimize or eliminate chemical related injury.

Many believe that sanitization is only important after an accident has occured. This is not the case. Sanitization is a necessary aspect of working with chemicals. Even something as simple as washing your hands when recommended can mean the difference between a normal work day, and a trip to the hospital.

With some chemicals, it is important to wash down at regular intervals, or in a special way. You can communicate these special requirements to your employees through proper labeling. An RTK warning label can include information about the chemical, PPE requirements and sanitization.
